Location, Location, Location!
This 10-acre property is located in the Puget Sound AVA on the very northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington state. It is also located in the southern end of the Olympic Mountain rain shadow where we receive 10 less inches of rain per year when compared to the rest of the Puget Sound region. With the majority of the rain occurring during the winter and early spring months the growing season is long and dry.
Soil
If you were to walk along the sandy beaches of the narrow peninsula you would be looking up at steep cliffs made of clay, it’s as if the tip of the peninsula is one big chunk of clay! Telve di sopra Vineyard is located on top of the peninsula in a farming valley rimmed by a horseshoe ridge of hills that shields the vineyard from the cold waters and breeze of the Puget Sound. It’s a very unique location as the surrounding ridge allows the day time highs in the valley to be more than 10° higher than the rest of the peninsula and the diurnal temperature shifts during veraison and ripening can often be more than 40 °F. Add in the heavy gray clay soils, which contain swirl deposits of red and orange iron and magnesium, and you have a terroir that allows for crafting bold aromatic wines with long acidity and delicate yet pronounced flavors.
Winery
The building was constructed in 2018 and contains four levels of gravity fed wine making, destemming, fermentation, racking, and a barrel storage room where the liquid is transferred without the use of a pump. It’s a small building with only 1865 sq. ft of internal space that was designed based on the yield capability of the estate vineyard.
